The river Whiteadder rises in the Lammermuir hills and is fed by the Bothwell, Moneynut and Dye waters. Tweed Almanacs indicate that the Whiteadder was previously the foremost tributary of the whole Tweed. At Allanton village the Blackadder joins as the river runs through high sided and quite dramatic valleys to join the Tweed above Berwick. Hutton Mills is roughly in the middle of this section with a mix of holding pools and faster runs.

The fishing on the estate is fly only all year round, there are thirteen named pools on the beat of varying length and is approx one and a half miles of single bank fishing, the opposite bank is rarely fished due to accessibility problems. Hutton Mills beat is divided into an upper and lower fishing at roughly the half way point of the fishery. Both beats are accessible by car, the upper beat pools can be driven to in a 4×4 as long as the fields are dry, the lower beat is more wooded but is accessible by a good footpath.

Both beats have a Fishing hut with stove and with seating etc.

No accurate catch records were kept of this fishery before 2002.

For the last six seasons the fishing has being syndicated with the estate retaining two rods which we let on a daily or weekly basis. The syndicate rods fish on a very intermittent basis, indeed the fishery has being very lightly fished over the last six seasons by them. There is no preference on the fishing by syndicate rods over let rods and there is lots of water to fish.

The beat does benefit during and after spates of water and can rise and fall quickly, often when all other beats on the Tweed system are washed off Hutton mills will be fishing.
